인물소개

뉴욕 대학교에서 박사학위를 받았으며, 1938년부터 1975년까지 뉴욕 대학교 쿠란트 수리과학연구소에서 교수로 재직하며 학생들을 가르쳤다. 은퇴 후에도 쿠란트 수리과학연구소 명예 교수로 일하며 수학과 수학교육에 관한 다양한 저술을 남겼다. 순수 수학만이 아니라 응용 수학의 의미와 가치를 대중적으로 인식시키는 데 크게 공헌했다. 주요 저서《수학 입문》(Introduction to Mathematics, 1937),《수학, 문명을 지배하다》(Mathematics in Western Culture, 1953),《수학과 물리 세계》(Mathematics and the Physical World, 1959),《왜 교수는 못 가르치는가?》(Why the professor can't teach?: Mathematics and the dilemma of university education, 1977),《수학의 확실성》(Mathematics: The Loss of Certainty, 1980),《비수학자를 위한 수학》(Mathematics for the Nonmathematician, 1985),《지식의 추구와 수학》(Mathematics and the Search for Knowledge, 1985)
