인물소개

위스콘신-메디슨대학교 철학과 교수. 주 연구 영역은 17세기 철학이며, 중세와 근대 초기 유대교 철학에 대해서도 연구하고 있다. 암스테르담대학교, 파리 사회과학고등연구원 등에서 교환교수를 지냈으며, Journal of the History of Philosophy의 현 편집장이다. 주요 저작으로는 이 책 『에티카를 읽는다』(Spinoza’s Ethics: An Introduction, 2006)를 비롯하여, The Philosopher, the Priest, and the Painter: A Portrait of Descartes(2013), A Book Forged in Hell: Spinoza’s Scandalous Treatise and the Birth of the Secular Age(2011), The Best of All Possible Worlds: A Story of Philosophers, God, and Evil(2010), Rembrandt’s Jews(2003), Spinoza’s Heresy: Immortality and the Jewish Mind(2002), Spinoza: A Life(1999, 『스피노자: 철학을 도발한 철학자』로 2011년 번역 출간) 등이 있으며, 펴낸 책으로는 The Cambridge History of Jewish Philosophy: From Antiquity through the Seventeenth Century(2009, 공편), The Cambridge Companion to Malebranche(2000) 등이 있다. Rembrandt’s Jews로 2004년 퓰리처상 논픽션 부분 최종심에 오른 바 있다.
